Antique Leather Bound Edition Mosses from an Old Manse by Nathaniel Hawthorne Altemus Beauxarts Series

This is an antique leather bound and embossed edition of Mosses from an Old Manse by Nathaniel Hawthorne, published by Henry Altemus as part of their 1897-1898 Beauxarts series. It features brown leather covers with embossed flowers on the cover and spine. The flowers are in shades of green and red with detailing in gold. There are two illustrated title pages as well as a black and white portrait plate of Hawthorne. There are several portrait plates throughout the book as well. This is a pocket-sized edition, and there are 548 pages.

The book is in good antique condition for its age and use. The red and green colors have faded somewhat and the gold as well, but for the most part, the illustrated covers are still intact. The leather is in good condition with some fraying along the corners and edges of the spine. Ermajene D. Champinir wrote her name and the date Dec. 15, 1897 in ink inside the front cover. Someone else also made shorthand notations in pencil in the upper right corner. The covers have separated from the spine at the first title page and at page 547. They are still attached by the webbing in both places. The pages have yellowed but not much.

The book measures 6 inches by 4.25 inches. It is 1 inch thick.
