This is the antique 1856 edition of Retribution A Tale of Passion by Mrs. Emma D.E.N. Southworth, published by T.B. Peterson & Brothers. The book has brown covers with an embossed seal on both front and back. The spine is decorated and lettered in gold. The endpapers are yellow. There are 305 pages.
The book is in good antique condition for its age and use. The gold lettering on the spine is intact with some slight fading. The cover is torn horizontally through the spine and the edges of the spine are flaking at both front and back covers, leaving the original book material exposed underneath. There is sticker residue on the front cover. Marian Rachel Walther wrote her name and Senior 1924 in ink inside the front cover, and there are other signatures as well. The pages have only yellowed slightly, but there is foxing.
The book measures 7.5 by 5 inches. It is 1.75 inches thick.
