This is the vintage 1938 edition of the Fifth Reader in the Child-Story Readers school book series, published by Lyons and Carnahan. It features a green cover with an illustration in black and red of what looks like a modern skyline with zeppelin. The cover and spine are lettered in black. The inside front and back covers are illustrated with an orange and white outline drawing of a covered wagon headed toward a modern city. There are 7 sections, including poems, tales, and non-fiction stories. The book is illustrated with orange color illustrations. There are 480 pages. This is an ex-library book, so the spine has the Dewey decimal number written on it, and there is also a library card and pocket in the back of the book.
The book is in good vintage condition for its age and use. The covers have general wear with some small staining and discoloration, as well as fraying to corners and edges. The covers are attached at the spine. This was a sample copy, and that is stamped inside the front cover. Someone wrote Dept. of Elem. Educ. Gr. 5 in ink inside the front cover. The pages are yellowed. There is library shorthand in pencil along with the library card and pocket inside the back cover.
The book measures 7.75 by 5.5 inches. It is 1 inch thick.
