This is a set of two antique schoolbooks with black covers and gold lettering. The set includes the 1887 edition of Harper's United States Sixth Reader published by Harper & Brothers. It also includes the 1888 edition of A History of the United States and Its People by Edward Eggleston, published by D. Appleton and Company. Both books leather spines and embossed covers. A History also has a gold illustration on the cover. Harper's has marbled end pages and A History has full color maps for its endpapers. Both are illustrated.
The books are in good antique condition for their age and use. They have general wear to covers and spines with some staining, discoloration, and fraying, especially the spine of Harper's. The gold lettering is intact on both. The spines are attached on both books. The pages are yellowed. E. Selke wrote their name and the date 1872 inside the front cover of Harper's.
The books vary in size. A History is 8.25 by 6 inches. It is 1 inch thick. Harper's is 7.5 by 5 inches. It is also 1 inch thick.
