This is a set of two hand-painted Japanese folk art boxes. One box has a treasure box profile with a curved lid and clear Lucite handle. The box is painted with a scene of Mt. Fuji on one side and a fishing line on the other. The box has a green diamond on the lid with red, white, and purple asters all over. The other box has the fishing line scene on the top surrounded by asters. The sides of the box are painted with big pink and red roses. Both boxes have scalloped edge bases and both have lids that sit on the top of the box. The roses on the side box is signed Manning on the bottom. Not sure if that's the artist or the previous owner!
The boxes are in good vintage condition for their age and use. Both have general wear with darkening to the wood and fading to the paint, giving them both a lovely patina. The Lucite handle has yellowed and there are two small blue paint blobs on the left hand center side of the lid. Both boxes have some small scratches, but they are both free of chips or cracks. The lids on both go on and off easily.
The Lucite handle box measures 7.25 inches long by 4.5 inches wide. It is 3 inches tall. The roses box is 6.25 inches long by 4.75 inches long. It is 3.5 inches tall.
