This is the antique Alta Edition of Handy Andy: A Tale of Irish Life by Samuel Lover, published in Philadelphia by Porter & Coates. This edition has a blue floral embossed cover with gold detailing on the spine. The spine is also embossed with a floral decoration. The endpapers are dark brown. There is one illustration plate at the title page. There are 419 pages with 12 pages of Porter & Coates inventory listings that follow. Porter & Coates began using the dual name for the publishing company in 1867, changing their name in 1895. With Porter & Coates listed on the title page, this book dates somewhere between 1867 and 1895!
The book is in good antique condition for its age and use. The covers have general wear, mostly to corners and edges. The gold on the spine is still bright with some minimal fading. The front cover has cracked at the inside spine. It is still attached but the webbing underneath is exposed. The back cover is beginning to crack. Someone wrote CS in pencil inside the front cover and glued a 25 cent Washington stamp certificate inside the back cover. The pages are browning with some foxing.
The book measures 7.5 by 5 inches. It is 1.25 inches thick.
