This is the rare 1909 first edition of Tempered Steel: A Romance by Herbert S. Mallory, published by R. F. Fenno and Company. It has dark green covers with gold lettering on both cover and spine. The cover also has a black and gold illustration of a brazier with silver smoke. The smoke forms a heart. There is one full color illustration plate at the title page. Tempered Steel is a classic historical fiction romance of star-crossed lovers. There are 426 pages.
The book is in good antique condition for its age and use. The covers have fraying to corners and edges. The gold lettering and illustration on the cover is still bright, but the gold lettering on the spine is faded. The illustration plate has detached from the spine. The covers are attached at the spine but cracked at the front cover. R. Tozzo wrote their name in pencil inside the front cover and A.E. Tebow also put their address label.
The book measures 7.75 by 5.25 inches. It is 1.5 inches thick.
